Potential to Emit Screening Tool Calculator

Security Issues: On some browsers this page may block "active content" as a security measure. If this happens a banner will appear at the top of the page. Click it and select an option that will allow active content. The code on this page will not make any changes to your PC or disk files.

Privacy Assurance: This tool will request that you enter data and make selections using your computer keyboard or mouse.  None of that interaction feeds any information to the Air Pollution Control District or to any other agency or person.  Using this tool will not plant any sort of "spyware" on your computer.  The sole purpose of this tool is to allow farmers to estimate their air emissions anonymously.

Quick Check

To determine if your agricultural operation requires a federal air permit from the APCD, you may perform a "Quick Check" by answering the following question.  However, it should be noted that this "Quick Check" is based on specific assumptions (e.g., crop water usage factors, well depths, emission factors, and equipment usage) that are not accurate for all farms. Greenhouses and dairy, poultry, or cattle grazing operations without internal combustion engines will not require federal operating permits and do not have to do any further screening at this time.

Do you have a farming operation with 2,000 or more contiguous acres irrigated using stationary internal combustion engines?  Click Yes or No, below.

Automated Calculator

In order to determine if you will need to obtain a permit, we must first calculate the emissions from your agricultural operation. A permit will be required if the calculated Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) or Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions from your agricultural operation are equal to or greater than 100 tons/year.

Please answer the questions below.  If the question does not apply to your operation, you may leave the box blank.

If you would like to view the formulas used for calculating emissions review the more detailed Emissions Calculation Worksheet.
